Major Deli Meat Recall: USDA Warns Consumers About Mislabeled Bologna Products

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a massive recall affecting more than 140,000 pounds of deli meats produced by Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc. due to mislabeling concerns. The ready-to-eat bologna products may contain undeclared meat sources, including pork, beef, or chicken, which were not listed on their packaging labels.

🔍 What Products Are Recalled?

The recall covers multiple bologna brands sold at wholesale and retail locations between March 20 and June 20, 2025. Consumers should check their refrigerators for the following products:

✔ Family Tree Bologna Veal
✔ Babushka’s Recipe Chicken Bologna
✔ Fancy Bologna
✔ Gaisers Russian Brand Doktorskaya Bologna
✔ Gaisers Bologna Veal
✔ Gaisers Turkey Bologna
✔ Chicken Bologna Kypoyka Paba

How to Identify Recalled Products:

  • Look for the USDA inspection mark with establishment number “EST. 5385”
  • Products may have been sold pre-packaged or sliced at deli counters

⚠️ Why Was This Recall Issued?

The issue was discovered after a consumer complaint was filed through the USDA’s Office of Inspector General hotline. The agency determined that the labels failed to disclose all meat ingredients, posing a potential risk to consumers with allergies, dietary restrictions, or religious dietary laws (such as those avoiding pork).

🛑 What Should Consumers Do?

Although the USDA has classified this as a Class III recall (meaning no immediate health risk has been reported), consumers are urged to:

  • Check their refrigerators for any of the listed products
  • Do not consume if the label is unclear or matches the recalled items
  • Dispose of the product or return it to the store for a refund

📢 Why This Recall Matters

  • Potential allergen risk for those avoiding certain meats
  • Religious dietary concerns (e.g., pork in products labeled as veal or turkey)
  • Lack of transparency in food labeling regulations
